Stephen Wilks
Vessel, 2015
Ceramic, 65 x 19 x 16 cm
British artist Stephen Wilks lives and works in Berlin. His fascination with anthropomorphic iconography, in which human characteristics are attributed to animals, often plays a vital role in his work. Wilks became internationally known with his works Donkey and the Animal Farm, which were shown at Sonsbeek, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Ludwig Forum, Cologne.
He showed Bottle River (Vessels) at the Hedge House in 2015, which featured a thousand ceramic bottles in a flowing line. The work evoked various associations: a river, a tide of people, ocean pollution, and contrasted the beauty of ceramics with the ubiquity of plastic PET bottles. The monumental installation and this ceramic sculpture by Wilks reflected the precarious balance between nature, humanity, and the environment.
