It's Like, You Know (non toxic), 2021
Acrylic on canvas, 43x53 cm
Wieteke Heldens is exceptionally talented and thinks deeply about her work and the world around her. She considers herself a painter. From this position, she can also destroy the paintings she makes, ensuring only essential elements remain. Her works are often about repetitions and recurring forms, giving them something of an obsessive and compulsive quality. She applies rules and mathematical formulas to give things a place in her head and make them concrete. As Heldens says, she makes her works to ‘deliver’ herself from her thoughts.
The work’s title implies something not explicitly stated or a question of whether one is still listening. It is made with ‘non-toxic paint’ because Heldens is pregnant. Her pregnancy is also an important subject of this work. Wieteke Heldens lives and works in New York, and we believe her work has acquired even more depth and substance since her move. We shall be hearing a lot more from Heldens!
