On Saturday 21 June, Midsummer’s Day, Kasteel Wijlre estate will open Elspeth Diederix’s cutting garden Equisetum. At 13:00, this green artwork will be festively presented in the presence of the artist.
The cutting garden is not a static garden, but a continuously transforming artwork in which artistic research and ecological engagement come together. Building on her research into the local flora on and around the estate for her 2024 solo exhibition Angelica Fields, Diederix has designed a composition of flower beds with native species, complementing the existing garden rooms.
Across ten beds, species such as Lady’s Bedstraw, Purple Loosestrife and Meadowsweet appear - plants that often go unnoticed, yet are essential to our ecosystem. By drawing attention to their unexpected beauty, Diederix invites us to reconsider our relationship with the everyday nature around us.
The garden evolves with the seasons, making change visible in colour, scent and rhythm. On special occasions, visitors may pick flowers to compose a bouquet, activating the garden in the process.
The opening during Season Session on Midsummer’s Day marks a turning point: the moment when light reaches its peak and the gradual shift towards transience begins. From then on, and well into autumn, many of the garden’s flower species will be at their most vibrant.
