Far from the Madding Crowd was an exhibition about paradoxical moments of isolation and exclusion in crowds. Some of the exhibition’s works depicted situations of chosen or forced isolation in which the individual is seen in contrast to the collective. Other works showed means and possibilities for realising such isolation as well as vehicles and strategies for escaping reality. The viewer shifted from being positioned as a voyeur to that of being part of the artwork. Set apart from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the Hedge House, Kasteel Wijlre estate’s contemporary art pavilion, became a metaphorical retreat in the context of the exhibition’s concept.
This exhibition was realised in collaboration with the Bonnefanten Museum.
