Castle

Since autumn 2024, the ground floor of the former Eyck family residence, a castle from 1652, has been made accessible for
visitors. Here you get an impression of the way in which art and the daily life of the Eyck couple, who moved from Heerlen to Wijlre in 1980, were intertwined. Jo and Marlies Eyck passed away in 2021 and 2023 respectively. The 'Gesamtkunstwerk' Kasteel Wijlre estate was their life's work, in which they harmoniously integrated contemporary art, architecture and nature with daily life. The ground floor of the Castle offers a glimpse into what that daily environment looked like.

Lin May Saeed – The Herd at the Watering Hole
11.05.2025 — 24.08.2025
Hedge House, Garden

The Herd at the Watering Hole is a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Lin May Saeed (DE, 1973-2023). Saeed was a German artist who dedicated her life and work to the promotion of animal rights, and left behind an idiosyncratic, sculpture-focused oeuvre in which animals play the leading role.

Solo Exhibition Gladys Zeevaarders
In the Coach House, the estate presents a solo exhibition by Gladys Zeevaarders (Kerkrade, 1993). Her artistic practice is characterised by an intuitive approach to archiving, visually documenting places, events, and relationships. Nature plays an increasingly important role in her work. For instance, she has created several series of prints based on her research into fungi and mushrooms in the natural world. Her methodology involves intensive fieldwork, including long walks and spending extended periods in nature. For her exhibition at the estate, Zeevaarders is developing new work inspired by the natural processes in the gardens and surrounding fields of the estate. Through field sketches, colour extractions of plants and flowers and collected natural traces, she develops a new visual and material archive.
